Ottobre

Event type: Project

Posizione: Cala Gonone, Sardinia, Italia

Contatto: Andrea Marassich, mara@gue,com

Event website: Marine Genome Project - Session 2024

Data: da Ottobre 5, 2024 a Ottobre 19, 2024

Descrizione: The Marine Genome Project is a groundbreaking scientific initiative, dedicated to unravelling the mysteries of marine organisms through genome sequencing and comprehensive studies. This ambitious endeavor aims to decode the genetic makeup of diverse marine species, solve their unique adaptations, and explore the potential applications of their genetic information.
Researchers in this project employ advanced DNA sequencing technologies to collect samples from marine organisms. Through analysis and interpretation of the genetic data, they strive to discover new species, gain insights into the intricacies of marine ecosystems, and develop accessible tools for effective marine conservation initiatives.
By delving into the depths of marine genomes, this project holds immense potential for expanding our knowledge of the intricacies of marine life. It offers us a glimpse into the fascinating adaptations that have evolved over millions of years, and the possibilities for harnessing these genetic resources for various scientific and practical applications.

Event website: Liveaboard Wonders

Data: da Dicembre 28, 2024 a Gennaio 4, 2025

Descrizione: GUE Liveaboard trip is one of the best ways to spend the last days of 2024 and open 2025 with some cool dives :-)

We are planning for a week of non-stop diving. Most of the dive sites accommodate both - shallow and deep ranges of depth. Therefore, this trip is open for GUE divers at all levels.

We will have a chance to combine wrecks and reefs. The dive sites we are planning to visit include such classics as : Brothers Islands. Gubal, Rosalie Moller. SS Thistlegorm or Abu Nuhas.

Luglio

Event type: Project

Posizione: Marine quest, Eyemouth, Scotland, Regno Unito

Event website: GUE North England

Data: da Luglio 16, 2025 a Luglio 20, 2025

Descrizione: As many of you know, the northern regions of GUE UK have of recent years had a home/base for most of its diving at the fantastic venue of Marine Quest, run by Iain Easignwold. Following some recent survey data made publicly accessible via an app called "Navionics", a possible location has arisen for the SS Maystone, sitting in 85m of water.

About the vessel:
Empire Wapping was launched 15/03/1945 and later completed May 1945. Being commissioned by Grangemouth dockyard company, Grangemouth for the Ministry of war transport - Stone & Rolfe Ltd, the ship's purpose was to be a general cargo ship.
The vessel measured a length of 281.6ft, breadth 40ft, depth of 13.9ft and had a tonnage of 2025-Ton. She was propelled via a single screw, and powered by a triple cylinder steam engine which gave an estimated speed of 12 knots.
In 1947 the vessel was sold to Thomas Stone Shipping LTD of Llanelly, Wales. Adopting her new name of SS Maystone, the vessel would remain in service until a tragic accident somewhere in the region of 4-5.2nm NNE of Longstone Lighthouse, Farne Islands. During a night of foul weather 18/10/1949, the ship was involved in a fatal collision with the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Albion. HMS Albion was a 22,000-Ton Centaur-class light fleet carrier of the Royal Navy. The ship was laid down in 1944 and launched in 1947 but did not enter service until 1954. Badly holing the hull of the aircraft carrier during the collision, she was later towed into Rosyth under the steam of two tugs. The yet to be complete carrier nearly sunk under tow off the coast of St.Abbs head before making it to safety for repair. SS Maystone lost all but 4 of her crew members during the collision, giving a total loss of 20 sailors.

What makes SS Maystone a worthy project target?
Not only is this quite a large wreck to have only been discovered in late 2023, but I believe it could be the only ship in UK waters to have ever been sunk by a aircraft carrier, which makes it a super cool story. To date, there has only been 1 dive team visit the wreck. Following their dive, there has been no formal identification of the wreck, only presumptions and guesstimations that it is the SS Maystone. As mentioned before, the wreck rests in 85m of water and lies twisted with her stern section on its side, and as you move towards the Bow the hull becomes more inverted.

Project Objectives:
First and foremost I'd like the team to verify/confirm that this is the wreck of the Maystone, as there is another wreck in the vicinity which is yet to be identified. There has been no bell found on the wreck, so this could be an objective for one team on the project. I'd also like to document the wreck in the form of photogrammetry and video, with the aim of producing a video around 5 minutes duration. I would also like to use this project as a stepping stone, as there has been continuous sonar data collection around this particular area for quite some time now for infrastructure for the renewable energy sector. With growth in mind, I'd like to expand the project in the coming years with the hope of moving towards an area called Farn Deeps, where an excess of a dozen unidentified wrecks lie.
